Hi, and welcome to a new edition of [The Daily Dealflow](https://www.theinvestorsociety.com/tag/the-daily-dealflow/) — the 5-minute briefing that gives you clear context on capital flows and market-moving trends across the Americas, from Silicon Valley to Buenos Aires. Let's dive in.

## 🏆 Headline of the Day

Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange by volume, lost about $6.3B in digital assets late Thursday in what investigators describe as **the largest crypto theft on record, more than four times the $1.5B Bybit hack of February 2025**. Binance suspended deposits and withdrawals, said about $3B was frozen on-chain so far, and said it will cover all losses from its Secure Asset Fund and company reserves. Bitcoin fell to around $77,000 – [Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/article/bitcoin-drops-to-76000-as-binance-hack-spooks-investors-tether-circle-freeze-assets-083406383.html?ref=theinvestorsociety.com).

**Why This?:** Binance is the biggest venue in the industry, so a hack of this size hits custody trust, stablecoin issuers and listed crypto stocks at once. It lands with Bitcoin already about 39% below its record high, in a market that was losing ETF money before the hack.

**Context:**

- **Binance's path:** Changpeng Zhao founded Binance in 2017\. In 2023 he pleaded guilty to a felony for failing to prevent money laundering on the platform and stepped down as CEO. He was later sentenced under the Bank Secrecy Act, released last year, and pardoned by President Trump in 2025\. Co-CEO Yi He now leads the company, and DefiLlama data put its holdings at about $144B before the hack, so the loss is roughly 4% of that – [AP via PBS](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/binance-flags-potential-security-issue-says-approximately-6-3-billion-impacted?ref=theinvestorsociety.com).
- **A market already in a low cycle:** Bitcoin set a record above $126,000 on Oct. 6, 2025 and bottomed just below $59,000 on June 30, 2026, a drop of more than 53%. That is milder than the 77% to 85% declines of past bear markets. It had touched $81,890 on Thursday before the news pushed it to $76,301, and U.S. spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs had lost more than $1B in net outflows by Oct. 9.
- **Freezes and attribution:** Tether froze more than $1.5B of USDT and Circle froze about $800M of USDC. Elliptic estimates attackers still control more than $3B that issuers cannot freeze directly. TRM Labs attributes the attack "with high confidence" to TraderTraitor, the North Korean group behind the Bybit hack.

**What to watch:**

- Withdrawals stay paused for now. CEO Yi He said they should resume by Sunday, and users cannot move funds off the exchange until then.
- The Secure Asset Fund holds about $1B in bitcoin against a $6.3B impact, so company reserves would have to cover the rest.
- Fundstrat's Sean Farrell said it does not currently appear to be a solvency event for Binance, which lowers the risk of a withdrawal spiral. Even so, Circle, Coinbase, Robinhood and Strategy each fell more than 6% premarket on Friday, Ether dropped about 4% to near $2,200 and BNB fell more than 5%.

**Zoom in:** Binance's preliminary investigation points to a single DevOps engineer's laptop, which gave the attacker access to a service container that could submit unauthorized withdrawals, and it found no evidence of a wallet private key leak.

China’s economy, like America’s, Taiwan’s and South Korea’s, lies firmly within the orbit of the global AI boom. But unlike those places, where optimism waxes and wanes, the Chinese stock market has turned implacably dark. The pessimism is plainest in tech-heavy stock-market benchmarks. But, as this chart shows, the bearishness has also spilled over to broader indices, such as the CSI 300, which tracks large-cap firms listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen.
