Coherence Neuro, a San Francisco-based startup building implantable devices to monitor and treat cancer, raised US$45 million in a round co-led by Founders Fund and the OpenAI Startup Fund, announced on October 22, 2026\. The company and FinSMEs describe it as a Series A, while WIRED reported it as a seed round. New investors include Lux Capital, 8VC, Timeless, Olive Capital and Ahren, joining returning backers Blackbird, Possible, Topology, Artesian, XEIA, Xtal and Divergent. Neuralink head neurosurgeon Matthew MacDougall and Neuralink principal investigator Rory Murphy also invested. The company, co-founded in Australia in 2022, is led by CEO Ben Woodington and CTO Elise Jenkins.

Its main device, SOMA, is a coin-sized implant that records electrical signals from a brain tumor and delivers targeted electrical stimulation meant to slow its growth. It works with a removable over-ear wearable and an app that tracks data, symptoms and therapy history. The company says its AI models, trained on recordings from animal studies, can predict whether a tumor is growing, shrinking or coming back. A temporary version was tested in three patients at Royal Melbourne Hospital during tumor-removal surgery in June 2026, staying in place for about 30 minutes. The new funding will go toward a first long-term human trial in glioblastoma, targeted for 2027, an application for FDA breakthrough device designation, early research in pancreatic cancer and team growth.

## Market Context

Glioblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in adults and one of the hardest to treat, with median survival of roughly 15 months after standard surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Electrical therapy for the disease is not new: Novocure's Optune, a wearable that uses electric fields, is already FDA-approved. Coherence's bet is that a device placed at the tumor can both read what is happening in real time and respond, instead of relying on periodic MRI scans.

The round lands as AI companies move closer to brain technology. OpenAI also participated in a US$252 million seed round for Merge Labs, a brain-computer interface startup co-founded by Sam Altman, in January 2026\. Founders Fund is an investor in Neuralink, and Synchron is pursuing a less invasive approach. Coherence itself raised a US$10 million seed round led by Artesian and Topology Ventures in November 2025, so the new round is more than four times larger, less than a year later.

## The Number

> **3** Patients who have received Coherence's implant so far, each for about 30 minutes during surgery. The long-term human trial is still ahead.

## Regional Relevance

For the United States, the deal shows AI investors looking past chatbots and toward medical data that is hard to collect, such as continuous signals from inside the body. A device that tracks tumors around the clock could change how oncologists monitor patients between scans. It also tests the FDA's breakthrough pathway, which is designed to speed review of devices for life-threatening conditions with few options.

For Australia, Coherence is another example of local deep-tech founders scaling through Silicon Valley while keeping clinical work at home. Its early human testing at Royal Melbourne Hospital and backing from Australian investors such as Blackbird and Artesian point to the country's role as a base for early clinical research before larger U.S. trials.

## The Other Side

**How much has been proven in people?** Very little so far. Three short tests during surgery show the device can be placed and can record, but they say nothing yet about whether stimulation slows tumor growth. The AI predictions were trained on animal data and have not been validated in large human studies.

**Is it a seed or a Series A, and what is it worth?** The company calls it a Series A; WIRED called it a seed round. The valuation was not disclosed. The difference matters for readers comparing the deal with other early-stage medtech rounds.

**What is OpenAI's interest?** The OpenAI Startup Fund is an independent vehicle, but its investments in brain technology raise questions about who will control continuous neural and tumor data, how it is stored and whether it could be used to train models. The announcement does not address data policies.
