Mural, a New York-based financial infrastructure company formerly known as Mural Pay, raised US$15 million in a Series A round led by Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, announced on October 20, 2026\. North Island Ventures and existing investors also participated, including Argentine entrepreneur Wences Casares, founder of Patagon and Xapo. The round brings Mural's total funding to US$28 million, including a US$5 million seed round in 2022\. The company was founded that year by CEO Sinclair Toffa and Chris Fernandes, both former engineers at Palantir. The valuation was not disclosed.

Mural runs the accounts, payments, identity checks and compliance behind financial products offered by other companies, so they do not have to build their own bank partnerships and licenses. Its clients include Deel, Opera and Axexo, which use it for payroll and cross-border payments, and end users can hold dollars, local currency and stablecoins in a single account. Mural has processed US$2.1 billion in payments for users in 128 countries since launching its API in 2025, and its 2026 volume so far is nearly six times last year's total, according to the company. It also offers controls for AI agents that act on a person's behalf, such as spending limits, counterparty approvals and extra authorization for large payments. The funds will support global expansion and investment in regulatory and payments infrastructure. In Latin America, Mural plans to hire a country manager in Argentina and strengthen operations in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, Toffa told La Nación.

## Market Context

Tether has become one of the most active strategic investors in crypto and AI. In the same week, its investment arm joined a US$1.5 billion Series E in chipmaker Tenstorrent at a US$6.2 billion valuation and invested in AI payments startup AIsa. Backing Mural gives Tether exposure to the layer that connects stablecoins with banks, payroll platforms and compliance systems.

The bet on "agentic finance," where AI agents move money for people and companies, is still early. PYMNTS Intelligence found that 89% of surveyed executives now use AI agents in at least one business area, but 78% of companies would only let agents read company systems, not act on them. That gap, between agents that can look things up and agents that can pay, is the market Mural is targeting.

## Key Signal

> "The economy is about to gain 10 billion new participants, and none of them are human." Sinclair Toffa, co-founder and CEO, Mural

## Regional Relevance

For the United States, Mural sits where two policy shifts meet: clearer federal rules for stablecoins after the GENIUS Act became law in July 2025, and the race among tech companies to let AI agents make purchases and payments. Mural operates its payment services through Mural Networks, a FinCEN-registered money services business, and works with U.S. bank partners. That compliance setup is what platforms like Deel rely on when they pay workers around the world.

For Latin America, the deal matters on two levels. Argentina, where Toffa calls the market "a pioneer in the use of stablecoins," has embraced digital dollars as a hedge against inflation, and Mural already works with local banks there. Across the region, many professionals work remotely for U.S. and European companies and need fast, low-cost ways to get paid in dollars. Mural has offices in Bogotá and a team spread across Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Mexico, which gives it a local base as it competes with regional fintechs for that payroll and remittance flow.

## The Other Side

**Does a Tether-led round raise neutrality questions?** Mural presents itself as a connector between banks, blockchains and local currencies. With the largest stablecoin issuer as its lead investor, clients and regulators may ask whether Mural's rails will favor USDT over competing stablecoins such as USDC. The announcement does not address this.

**How solid are the numbers?** The US$2.1 billion processed and the nearly sixfold growth are company figures. Mural has not disclosed revenue, margins or how much of the volume comes from its largest clients. A 30-person team serving users in 128 countries also points to heavy reliance on partners.

**Who is responsible when an AI agent makes a bad payment?** Spending limits and approvals reduce risk, but rules on liability for agent-initiated payments are still unclear in the U.S. and across Latin America. Expanding into Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico also means dealing with four different regulators, each with its own approach to crypto and digital payments.
