Peak Energy, a Burlingame, California-based developer of sodium-ion battery storage for the power grid, announced on October 21, 2026, that it closed an oversubscribed US$108 million Series B round led by General Motors Ventures. Maverick Silicon, Infinite Capital, Eclipse, Xora Innovation and LG Technology Ventures also participated. The company was founded in 2023 by veterans of Tesla, Enovix and Fluence and is led by co-founder and CEO Landon Mossburg. Its valuation was not disclosed. Peak plans to use the money to scale U.S. manufacturing, deliver on its existing orders and launch its product in the data center market.

Peak's systems use sodium instead of lithium and are passively cooled, meaning they do not need the air conditioning or liquid cooling that conventional battery systems rely on. The company says this cuts the cost of stored energy by up to 20%, uses no water and removes the need for planned maintenance. Peak reports about US$1.1 billion in customer orders, mostly from a 4.75 GWh deal with Jupiter Power and a 1.5 GWh deal with Energy Vault, Bloomberg reported. RWE is also a customer. Peak currently ships small volumes from a pilot line in San Francisco, and its 4 GWh factory in Sacramento is expected to start production in the first quarter of 2027\. In June, Peak and GM announced a partnership in which GM develops sodium-ion cells at its Michigan battery labs for later use in Peak's systems.

## Market Context

Sodium-ion is still a small market. BloombergNEF expects demand to grow from just over 1 GWh in 2025 to 257 GWh by 2035, when sodium-ion could account for almost 10% of stationary storage. For now, sodium-ion cells cost more than lithium-ion cells, which have become very cheap thanks to massive production volumes. Both technologies face the same supply chain challenge: most battery manufacturing is concentrated in China and other parts of Asia.

The data center angle explains much of the investor appetite. AI is driving a sharp rise in electricity demand, and access to power has become one of the main limits on how fast new data centers can be built. Peak's pitch is a storage system that is safer and cheaper to run near those facilities. The round follows a US$55 million Series A in 2024 led by Xora Innovation, Temasek's deep-tech platform, and comes as GM expands beyond electric vehicles into grid-scale energy storage.

## What Stands Out

> "You just want to catalyze this supply chain as much as possible. It's already catalyzed in China." Landon Mossburg, Co-founder and CEO, Peak Energy (to Bloomberg)

## Regional Relevance

For the United States, the deal links three national priorities: building a domestic battery supply chain, keeping up with power demand from AI, and reducing dependence on Chinese manufacturing. Sodium is abundant and widely available in the U.S., unlike lithium, which is concentrated in a handful of countries. GM's involvement also shows how automakers are looking for new uses for their battery expertise as electric vehicle demand grows more slowly than expected.

For California, the Sacramento factory adds manufacturing jobs and positions the state as a base for next-generation storage. For Latin America, the story has a double edge. Chile and Argentina are major lithium producers, and wider use of sodium-ion storage could eventually reduce some demand for lithium in stationary storage. At the same time, the region's own data center build-out, led by Mexico, Brazil and Chile, faces the same power constraints, which could make lower-cost, water-free storage an option for local operators.

## The Other Side

**Can Peak deliver at factory scale?** Peak is still shipping small volumes from a pilot line, and its first commercial factory is not expected to produce until early 2027\. More than US$1 billion in orders is significant, but the announcement does not explain the delivery schedules, conditions or penalties attached to those contracts. Moving from pilot to mass production is where many battery startups have stumbled.

**Will sodium-ion win on cost?** Peak's 20% cost advantage is a company claim, and it compares total cost of stored energy, not the price of the cells themselves. Today, lithium-ion cells are cheaper. Investors such as Eclipse partner Greg Reichow argue sodium-ion will "ultimately be lower cost" as it scales, but that depends on volumes the industry has not reached yet.

**How deep is the data center demand?** The funding is partly a bet on AI power needs. The announcement does not name any data center customers, and current orders come mostly from grid storage developers. If AI infrastructure spending slows, that part of the plan could take longer to materialize.
