# Poseidon Aerospace Raises US$60 Million for Pilotless Cargo Planes

Poseidon Aerospace, an uncrewed cargo aircraft company based in Alameda, California, announced on September 8, 2026 that it had closed an oversubscribed US$60 million Series A led by TQ Ventures. The round drew Hanwha Asset Management USA, G Squared and JAWS as new investors, alongside existing backers Starship Ventures, Draper Associates and Drover Ventures. The company was co-founded by Chief Executive Officer David Zagaynov, previously in logistics at Amazon, and Parker Tenney, previously at Lockheed Martin. Combined with an US$11 million seed round led by Tamarack Global in November 2025, the raise takes total funding to US$71 million.

The money is meant to carry Poseidon from scale models to a real airplane. Its flagship aircraft, the Egret, is a fixed-wing freighter with a wingspan of roughly 50 feet and a payload of up to about two tons, powered by a combustion engine rather than batteries or rotors, and flown autonomously with a remote operator in the loop. A quarter-scale demonstrator called the Seagull flew in 2025, and the company expects the first full-size uncrewed flight by the end of 2026\. A seaplane variant, the Heron, is aimed at Indo-Pacific operations where runways are scarce. Poseidon plans to operate its own regional cargo service on routes of roughly 500 to 1,000 miles rather than sell airframes to other carriers, targeting defense logistics and commercial lanes that FedEx and UPS serve thinly or not at all.

## Market Context

The autonomous cargo aircraft market was valued at US$1.37 billion in 2025 and is estimated at US$1.72 billion in 2026, with forecasts pointing to US$4.15 billion by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate near 25%. North America holds the largest share. The competitive field splits into two camps, and Poseidon has picked the harder one. Reliable Robotics, which retrofits autonomy onto the existing Cessna 208B Caravan, raised US$160 million in April 2026 led by Nimble Partners at a valuation around US$1 billion, bringing its total to roughly US$300 million on the back of FAA-accepted certification plans and a US$17.4 million Air Force contract. Poseidon is instead building a clean-sheet airframe, which means no certified type to lean on but also no cockpit, no pilot weight and no design compromises made for a human.

Defense budgets are already funding the category. Elroy Air won a US$46.06 million firm-fixed-price Army contract in 2026 for its hybrid-electric Chaparral, a Group IV system with a 500-pound payload and 450-mile range, running through February 2029\. That is the demand signal Poseidon is aiming at with the Heron, and it is why an asset manager tied to a South Korean defense group appears on the cap table. On the commercial side, the pitch rests on unit economics: regional freight is the part of air cargo where crew costs weigh most heavily against small payloads, and where aging turboprop fleets have left carriers reluctant to add thin routes.

## Regional Relevance

For the United States, Poseidon sits inside a broader push to rebuild air logistics around software rather than airframes. The country's regional feeder network runs largely on turboprops designed in the 1980s, flown by a pilot pool that express carriers and regional airlines have spent years competing over. Removing the cockpit changes the math on which routes can carry freight at all, which matters for rural pharmacy and medical supply chains, for e-commerce fulfillment outside major metros, and for the Pentagon's interest in moving cargo to places without runways or secure ground routes. The unresolved variable is regulatory: the FAA's Part 108 framework for beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations is still working through the gap between small drones and multi-ton uncrewed aircraft, and Poseidon's business plan depends on the agency closing it.

California is the second layer. The Bay Area has become the center of gravity for autonomous aviation, with Reliable Robotics in Mountain View, Elroy Air in South San Francisco and Poseidon in Alameda, all drawing on the same pool of engineers moving between Amazon, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris and the region's autonomous vehicle companies. Alameda's former naval air station has attracted this kind of work for a decade, and the state now hosts a cluster whose customers are mostly federal and whose manufacturing base is small. Poseidon also keeps facilities in Washington and Maine, a spread that reflects where aerospace tooling and composites talent still sit.

The Indo-Pacific framing points to the third constituency. By building a seaplane variant explicitly for island logistics, Poseidon is positioning for allied defense procurement as much as US contracts, in a region where several governments are expanding budgets for distributed logistics and where fixed infrastructure is the vulnerability.

## The Other Side

**Can a startup certify a clean-sheet uncrewed freighter before its runway ends?** Reliable Robotics chose a certified airframe precisely because type certification is slow and expensive, and it still has not reached routine uncrewed commercial operations after roughly US$300 million raised. Poseidon has US$71 million and a first flight that has not happened yet. The company's fixed-wing, combustion-engine choices are deliberately conservative, which helps, but the certification path for a two-ton aircraft with no pilot on board remains unwritten.

**Is operating the airline the right call?** Selling aircraft is capital-light; running a cargo network means buying fuel, hiring operators, building maintenance and winning shippers away from incumbents with dense networks. It also means Poseidon captures the full margin if the economics work. Investors appear to be underwriting the second scenario, but the model turns a hardware bet into a logistics business with a much longer path to scale.

**How much of this depends on defense spending that could shift?** Group IV cargo UAS programs are attracting real contracts now, and a Hanwha-linked investor and a Lockheed co-founder suggest where the near-term revenue is expected. If commercial routes prove harder to open than projected, Poseidon becomes a defense supplier competing with Elroy Air, Kratos and primes with existing program relationships, which is a different company than the one described in the pitch.
