Stand, a San Francisco-based home insurance company focused on areas exposed to natural disasters, has raised a US$70 million Series C at a US$1 billion valuation. Saga Ventures led the round, announced on October 15, 2026, with participation from Lowercarbon, Eclipse, Equal Ventures, Inspired Capital, Neotribe and Jackson Square Ventures. The deal brings total funding to about US$130 million. Stand was co-founded in 2024 by CEO Dan Preston, former CEO of auto insurer Metromile, and Bill Clerico, co-founder of payments company WePay.

Stand's "World Model" builds a digital version of each home and simulates how it would hold up against wildfire, wind and other disasters, based on building materials, nearby vegetation and local weather. The company then recommends specific upgrades, connects owners with contractors, verifies the work and offers policies with discounts of up to 70% for homes that qualify. Policies are issued through Concert Specialty Insurance Company in California and Stand Insurance Exchange in Florida, with reinsurance from Arch, RenaissanceRe, Hannover, Nephila and Hiscox. Stand also named Drew Saad, formerly of PURE Insurance, as President of Property and Casualty, and Tony Landi, formerly of Nephila, as CFO.

## Market Context

Stand now insures more than US$10 billion in property, up from about US$1 billion a year earlier. Its growth comes as traditional insurers pull back from high-risk regions. By mid-2024, at least eight carriers had left California or limited their exposure there, pushing many homeowners into the state's FAIR Plan, the insurer of last resort. The January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires destroyed more than 12,000 structures and sharpened the crisis. Preston told CNBC at the time that inbound demand rose five to ten times overnight.

Most insurers price policies using historical losses and broad regional risk. Stand prices each property individually and gives credit for steps owners take to reduce risk. Its focus has been high-value homes, initially those worth US$2 million to US$10 million. The company recently expanded into Florida, where hurricane exposure has driven many insurers out of the market.

## Key Signal

> "Disasters follow the laws of physics, and insurance should too." Dan Preston, Co-founder and CEO, Stand

## Regional Relevance

For the United States, Stand addresses one of the country's fastest-growing financial risks: homes that are becoming hard or impossible to insure. Without coverage, owners cannot get mortgages, which puts pressure on property values and local tax bases. A model that ties premiums to proven safety upgrades could give homeowners a direct financial reason to invest in prevention, rather than relying on state backstops after disasters strike.

For California and Florida, the two states where Stand operates, the stakes are especially high. Both have seen insurers cut back, and both rely heavily on state-backed plans that face large losses in a major event. Stand's growth shows that private capital and reinsurers are still willing to take on catastrophe risk when it can be measured property by property.

## The Other Side

**Has the model been tested by a major disaster?** Stand launched its first product in December 2024\. Its simulations have not yet been proven against a full season of large claims, and one severe event could test both its pricing and its reinsurance support.

**Who can afford the upgrades?** The discount of up to 70% rewards owners who can pay for fire-resistant roofs, vegetation clearing or storm-proofing. That may favor wealthier homeowners, while lower-income households in the same risk zones remain underserved.

**What does US$10 billion in coverage really mean?** The figure measures the total value of insured property, not premiums or profits. Stand has not disclosed policy counts, revenue or loss ratios, so its financial performance remains unclear.
