TypeSafe AI, a San Francisco startup building AI models for software rather than for people, raised about US$870 million in a Series A at a US$7.5 billion valuation, Bloomberg reported on October 9, 2026\. Andreessen Horowitz led the round and wrote the largest check, with Sequoia Capital and angel investors also taking part. The company was founded in 2024 by CEO Diogo Almeida, a former OpenAI researcher who worked on InstructGPT and on reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), the training method behind ChatGPT. His co-founders are CTO Erik Gafni and COO Sasha Sheng.

The round comes less than a month after TypeSafe came out of stealth on September 15 with a US$40 million seed led by DCVC and launched its first model, Jev. Jev does not write sentences. It answers "typed" questions with a structured result, such as a choice from a list, a score or a probability, plus a confidence level that tells the software whether to act, ask for more data or pass the case to a person. The company says Jev passed one million users within days and is used by about one-third of the Fortune 500, though it has not named those customers.

## Market Context

The jump in price is the headline inside the headline. Forbes reported the seed valued TypeSafe at around US$200 million, which means the company's valuation rose more than 35 times in under four weeks. Early traction helped: on Vercel's AI Gateway, nearly 13% of paid teams tried Jev within 24 hours of launch, and Vercel called it the fastest-adopted model in the gateway's history. The Information has also reported investor talks about a raise of US$1 billion or more at a valuation of at least US$10 billion.

TypeSafe is betting that the next wave of AI spending goes to routine, high-volume decisions inside business software, like sorting service tickets, checking invoices or triaging security alerts. For those tasks, a full chatbot answer is slow and expensive. TypeSafe says Jev responds in under 100 milliseconds and, in its own tests on selected workflows, ran about 194 times faster and 445 times cheaper than large language models, at 39 cents per 1,000 workflows versus US$3.31 for an OpenAI model. None of those figures has been independently benchmarked.

## Key Signal

> "Most intelligence should eventually live inside software, running quietly in the background." Diogo Almeida, CEO and Co-Founder, TypeSafe AI

## Regional Relevance

For the United States, the deal shows where top investors think AI money goes after chatbots and coding assistants: into the back-office plumbing of companies. If a model can make simple decisions cheaply and reliably, companies can automate work that today is too costly to hand to a large language model. It also adds to a pattern of very large early rounds for researchers who left OpenAI and other big labs, with valuations set by reputation and early usage more than by revenue.

For San Francisco, TypeSafe reinforces the city's role as the center of frontier AI. The company works fully in person there and has hired from OpenAI, Google Brain and Meta FAIR, competing for the same small pool of researchers as the largest labs. For companies outside the U.S., including in Latin America, cheaper decision models could lower the cost of automating tasks like claims review or fraud screening, though TypeSafe has not announced any plans or customers outside its home market.

## The Other Side

**Is a third of the Fortune 500 a real customer base?** TypeSafe has not named a single large customer. "Using" Jev can mean a team testing a free model, and Jev was free on Vercel's gateway through September 25\. The company has not shared revenue, paid accounts or how many of its one million users are active.

**How solid are the speed and cost numbers?** The 194x and 445x figures come from TypeSafe's own tests on tasks it chose. A narrow model can beat a general one on narrow jobs; the open question is accuracy, and whether Jev's confidence scores hold up in messy, real-world workflows.

**Can the valuation hold?** A 35-fold jump in four weeks prices in a lot of future success. If OpenAI, Google or Anthropic ship cheaper structured-output models of their own, TypeSafe's speed advantage could shrink before its revenue catches up.
