Reservoir Raises $8M to Make Water Heaters That People and the Grid Will Actually Want
Reservoir has raised US$8 million in seed funding led by Asymmetric Capital Partners, with participation from Founder Collective and MCJ, to build AI-enabled heat pump water heaters that double as grid-connected energy storage. The Boston-area company was founded by CEO Luke Winston-Almanzar, previously chief business officer at 3D printing company Formlabs, which he helped scale to a US$2 billion valuation and 1,000 employees; chief product officer Gabriel Parisi-Amon, a former Apple engineer who co-founded the water technology company Nebia before its 2023 acquisition; and chief technology officer Jake Felser, who built rocket engines at Blue Origin and later served as CTO of Freight Farms.
The product is a heat pump water heater roughly four times more efficient than a conventional electric model and five times more efficient than natural gas. Its software learns a household's usage patterns over the first month, then heats water during off-peak hours, a meaningful gap in markets like Boston where off-peak power can cost 5 cents per kilowatt-hour against 50 cents at peak.
