Who Grades the AI Models?
Hi, and welcome to a new edition of The Daily Dealflow — the 5-minute briefing that gives you clear context on capital flows and market-moving trends across the Americas, from Silicon Valley to Buenos Aires. Let's dive in.
🏆 Deal of the Day
Arena, the crowdsourced AI leaderboard that started in 2023 as a UC Berkeley research project, raised a $200M Series B at a $3.1B valuation. Lightspeed and Khosla Ventures led, with Salesforce Ventures, 01 Advisors, Dell Technologies Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, a16z and Felicis also in – TechCrunch.
Why This? Every AI lab wants a top spot on the same public scoreboard, and investors are now paying unicorn prices for the scorekeeper.
Positive Context:
- The valuation went from $1.7B post-money in January 2026, when annualized revenue was $30M, to $3.1B about 10 months later. By June, Arena said it had reached $100M in ARR.
- The consumer site is free and claims tens of millions of monthly visitors, while the paid product, AI Evaluations, has sold performance analytics to model labs and enterprises since September 2025.
Yes, but:
- AI labs have been caught gaming benchmark tests to score high without real capability gains, which puts any public ranking's credibility on the line.
- Enterprises increasingly want evaluations built around their own internal needs, and the visitor and revenue figures are company-provided.
Zoom in: Arena just added an "alignment" category that ranks models on unauthorized actions, false attribution and "deceptive completion," meaning claiming to have finished tasks that were never done.
The comment: "AI is advancing faster than our ability to evaluate it," Arena said in its funding announcement, reported by TechCrunch.
