Hi, and welcome to a new edition of The Daily Dealflow — the 5-minute briefing that gives you clear context on capital flows and market-moving trends across the Americas, from Silicon Valley to Buenos Aires. Let's dive in.

🏆 Deal of the Day

El Segundo–based Valar Atomics raised a $1 billion Series B led by Sequoia, valuing the company at $6 billion, to mass-produce modular nuclear microreactors in factories and ship them to power AI data centers, Tech Startups reported.

Why This?: It's the clearest signal yet that the AI capital race has shifted from chatbots to physical infrastructure — chips, power and now reactors — the layer investors across the Americas will be chasing next.

Positive Context:

  • The $1B round, plus a $200M credit line, lands weeks after Valar says it powered an Nvidia AI chip with a live reactor, with Point72, Atreides and Snowpoint joining Sequoia in the round.
  • Backing capital-intensive nuclear bets alongside rivals like Commonwealth Fusion shows investors now treat energy as core AI infrastructure, not a speculative side wager.

Yes, but:

  • Factory-built microreactors shipped to site remain an unproven manufacturing model at the scale Valar is promising, with no commercial unit yet in service.
  • A $6B valuation on pre-commercial nuclear technology leaves little room for delay in a notoriously slow-moving, heavily regulated industry.

Zoom in: Valar's pitch leans on a single July demo — powering one Nvidia AI chip for a webpage — used to justify a valuation six times the round size.

"AI is building very quickly. We need a lot of power in every direction." — Isaiah Taylor, Valar Atomics CEO, via Tech Startups.

Last year America’s biggest technology companies, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft, spent $450bn on infrastructure, much of it to power AI. This year they plan to spend $900bn on chips, data centres, power and so forth, followed by $1.4trn in 2027. This chart shows how the AI capex boom is fast becoming the largest investment surge in history, compared with previous economic booms such as Britain’s railway mania and America’s dotcom bubble. If superintelligence is in reach, building football fields’ worth of computing power could be history’s most valuable capital-allocation exercise. But the record-breaking spending could still generate disappointing returns. AI revenues are growing fast—but perhaps not fast enough to match the influx of investment. Source: The Economist.
