OpenAI announced that David Vélez, founder, Chairman and Global CEO of Nubank, and Robin Vince, Chairman and CEO of BNY, are joining the boards of the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC. The move brings together two executives with long track records in banking, technology and global expansion at a moment when the company that owns ChatGPT needs more structure to support its next stage of growth.

Vélez comes from a fintech platform serving 135 million customers across Latin America, while Vince leads one of Wall Street’s oldest and most systemic financial institutions. That makes this appointment more a signal of governance, control and scale than just another corporate announcement.

What happened

OpenAI said that Vélez and Vince will sit on both the OpenAI Foundation board and the OpenAI Group PBC board. According to the company, both bring experience in international leadership, technology, financial services and corporate governance, capabilities that are now central to a firm seeking to expand the commercial and social reach of its AI systems.

These are not peripheral committees, but the two bodies that define OpenAI’s mission and corporate operations. In other words, the company is reinforcing the level where strategy, institutional control and business direction intersect.

Market context

Generative AI has moved into a very different phase from its first viral launches. The market’s focus is now on how these companies manage risk, regulatory relationships, corporate partnerships and capital structures, especially as their products become infrastructure for other sectors.

In that context, OpenAI is not simply looking for personal prestige on its board. It is adding profiles shaped by highly supervised industries, global operations and real compliance demands, a combination that fits a company no longer competing just for attention, but for legitimacy and durability.

Who Vélez and Vince are

David Vélez is the founder and Global CEO of Nubank, the financial platform born in Brazil that grew from a no-fee credit card into a digital operation serving 135 million customers in Latin America. His profile blends product building, regional expansion and execution in digital financial services, three strengths that are especially valuable for a tech company aiming to operate at large scale under regulatory pressure.

Robin Vince is Chairman and CEO of BNY, a global financial institution with a long history in custody, market infrastructure and financial services for institutional clients. He brings experience in traditional banking, supervision, risk management and the governance of a systemic organization, a very different complement to Vélez but highly aligned with OpenAI’s current corporate moment.
