Profound Raises US$180M to Make AI Assistants Recommend Your Brand
Profound, a New York software company that helps brands track and influence how artificial intelligence assistants describe them, said on September 15, 2026 that it had raised US$180 million in a Series D round at a US$1.8 billion valuation. Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins co-led, with Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, Saga Ventures, Evantic and South Park Commons participating. The round lands roughly seven months after a US$96 million Series C valued the company at US$1 billion, and it makes Profound the clearest winner so far in the category marketers have started calling answer engine optimization, or AEO.
The company was founded in 2024 by Chief Executive Officer James Cadwallader and Chief Technology Officer Dylan Babbs, and now serves more than 1,000 enterprise brands, including Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies, Walmart, Campari Group, Royal Bank of Canada, Zoom, ServiceNow, Ramp, MongoDB, Figma and U.S. Bank. Roughly a third of the Fortune 100 and 16% of the Fortune 500 use the product, and revenue tripled over the past six months. Profound started as an analytics tool that showed brands how often and how favorably models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mentioned them, built on a data set the company says now exceeds 2 billion real user prompts. It has since added AI Marketer, an agent that runs research, writing and reporting tasks, a Context Manager that packages company knowledge for models to draw on, and Ads Studio for campaigns across OpenAI, Google and Meta surfaces. The new money will expand an applied AI lab in New York and San Francisco.
Market Context
The category exists because the traffic math changed. Consumers increasingly get an answer instead of a list of links, which strips referral visits from the brands that used to win the top result and removes the feedback loop that made search engine optimization measurable. Answers also move: the sources an assistant cites for the same question vary widely across models and over time, so a brand's visibility is not a ranking it can hold but a distribution it has to manage.
That has pulled a crowded field into the space, from incumbents such as Semrush, Similarweb and Ahrefs bolting AI visibility onto existing suites, to startups including Scrunch AI and AirOps. Profound's response has been to move up the stack rather than defend a metrics dashboard, selling agents that act on the data rather than just report it, and pricing to enterprise marketing budgets rather than SEO tool budgets. A valuation that went from US$1 billion to US$1.8 billion in seven months, against revenue that tripled in six, prices the category leader rather than the current revenue.
What Stands Out
"Profound started as an analytics platform for marketers to understand how buyers discover their brands through AI. Today, they're using our Agents to research, write, and report." — James Cadwallader, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Profound
Regional Relevance
For the United States, the significance is what the round says about where marketing budgets are moving. Search advertising and SEO services are a multibillion-dollar American industry built on a single assumption, that a user types a query and chooses among ranked links. AI assistants break that assumption, and a US$1.8 billion valuation for a two-year-old company selling the replacement measurement layer is the market pricing how fast the shift is happening. It also puts Profound in an awkward position relative to the model providers, since the visibility it sells depends on systems owned by OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, any of which could build the same reporting or change how citations work.
The second layer is competitive concentration. Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed and Khosla are all now on the same cap table, which funds a land grab rather than a product race and tends to shorten the window for everyone else in the category. Profound's push into agents that write and buy media also puts it on a collision course with the ad-tech platforms and the agency holding companies, not just with SEO vendors.
For markets outside the United States, including Latin America, the practical read is that the visibility problem arrives before the tooling does. Regional brands are already being summarized by assistants in Spanish and Portuguese, using sources those brands do not control and in many cases do not monitor. Enterprise pricing built for the Fortune 500 does not travel easily to mid-market companies in São Paulo or Mexico City, which leaves an opening for local competitors and a gap for everyone else in the meantime.
The Other Side
What happens if the model providers absorb this layer? OpenAI and Google already know which sources they cite and are building their own advertising products. If they ship brand visibility reporting natively, Profound's analytics core becomes a feature, and the agent products it just bought its valuation with have to carry the business on their own.
Is tripling revenue in six months a durable signal? Early spending on a new category often comes from experimental budgets, which are the first to be cut and the easiest to consolidate into a suite a company already pays for. The test is renewal rates in 2027, not growth in 2026.
Can anyone actually optimize for an answer engine? The mechanics of why a model cites one source over another are opaque, change with every model release, and are not disclosed. Brands may be buying measurement of something they cannot reliably influence, which is a real product but a narrower one than the pitch implies.
