Two Months Old, Already Worth Billions
Hi, and welcome to a new edition of The Daily Dealflow β the 5-minute briefing that gives you clear context on capital flows and market-moving trends across the Americas, from Silicon Valley to Buenos Aires. Let's dive in.
π Deal of the Day
River AI, a two-month-old startup founded by former xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, raised $1.1 billion in a seed/Series A round led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator and Temasek also participating β TechCrunch.
River's pitch centers on a gap it says most companies face today: building a custom AI model normally requires a dedicated infrastructure team, specialized hardware and months of work, putting it out of reach for all but the largest players. Its API closes that gap, letting any developer fine-tune and run reinforcement learning on frontier open-weight models in 15β20 minutes with no infrastructure team, billing strictly for tokens used rather than idle GPU time. The bigger ambition goes further: instead of aligning one general-purpose model to billions of users, Babuschkin wants to give every person and company an AI trained on their own data and genuinely under their control, eventually running on dedicated personal hardware rather than in a lab's data center β River AI.
Why This?: The round shows how aggressively capital is concentrating in AI infrastructure at the earliest possible stage, resetting the fundraising bar founders across the Americas now have to compete against.
We are incredibly excited to announce River AI. Our mission is to create personal AI that is owned and shaped by you.

Positive Context:
- River's API completes reinforcement-learning training runs in 15β20 minutes at two to four times lower cost than closed-source alternatives β a concrete technical edge backing the valuation.
- The round pulled chipmakers (Nvidia, AMD Ventures) and sovereign-linked capital (Temasek) alongside top-tier VCs, signaling conviction well beyond a typical seed round.
Yes, but:
- A multi-billion-dollar valuation for a two-month-old company with no shipped public product revives familiar bubble-era durability concerns.
- Mega-rounds like this concentrate capital in a handful of AI infrastructure bets, potentially crowding out funding for earlier-stage and non-AI founders.
Zoom in: Babuschkin left xAI only months before assembling this round, and River had no public product live when the term sheet closed.
